Sonora on iPhone.

Sonora is not on the App Store. Every release includes an unsigned IPA that you install with a sideloading tool. iOS also works a little differently: music lives in the app’s own folder.

Good to know: the iOS version is new. So far it has only been tested on an iOS simulator, not on a real iPhone. It needs iOS 15 or newer. Please report problems. Open an issue

Install

Sideload the IPA.

iOS refuses to install an unsigned app directly, not from Safari and not from the Files app. A sideloading tool signs it with your own Apple ID and installs it.

Download the IPA

Get sonora-ios.ipa from the latest release on GitHub.

Turn on Developer Mode

On iOS 16 and later: Settings, Privacy & Security, Developer Mode. Then restart the phone.

Install with a tool

Pick a tool below, add the IPA and sign in with your Apple ID.

AltStore

Install AltServer on a Mac or Windows PC, then open the IPA in AltStore on the iPhone. It refreshes the app in the background while the computer is nearby on the same Wi-Fi.

altstore.io

SideStore

Works like AltStore, but refreshes on the iPhone itself. After the one-time setup you do not need a computer.

sidestore.io

Sideloadly

A desktop tool for Windows and macOS. Connect the iPhone, drag in the IPA, enter your Apple ID and click Start.

sideloadly.io

TrollStore

Installs permanently with no expiry, but only works on specific iOS versions.

After installing

  • Open Settings, General, VPN & Device Management, and trust your Apple ID profile. Then open Sonora.
  • A free Apple ID allows 3 sideloaded apps at a time, and the app expires after 7 days until it is refreshed. AltStore and SideStore refresh it automatically. Apple’s paid developer programme lifts this to one year.
  • To update, install the newer IPA over the old one. Do not delete the app first, or your music goes with it.
  • Sonora is not affiliated with or endorsed by these tools.

Your music

Adding music on iPhone.

This is different from Android. iOS apps can only read their own folder, so Sonora plays from Documents/Music inside the app. Put your files there first. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.

A

With the Files app

No computer needed. Open Sonora once so it creates its folder. In Files, go to Browse, On My iPhone, Sonora, Music, and copy your songs in. Then pull down on the song list in Sonora, or tap Sync Now in Settings.

B

With a Mac

Connect the iPhone and select it in Finder. Open the Files tab, expand Sonora and drag your music into the Music folder. Then run Sync Now in Sonora.

C

Inside the app

Tap Add music in onboarding, in Settings or on the empty library screen. Pick one or more audio files and Sonora copies them into its Music folder. Run Sync Now if they do not show up at once.

Good to know

Tips and limits.

How should I organise the folder?

Music/Artist/Album/Track.mp3 works best. When a file has no artist or album tags, Sonora uses these folder names instead.

Which formats work?

MP3, M4A/AAC, FLAC and WAV are the safe choices, and the only ones the Add music picker offers. Others such as Opus, OGG or WMA depend on your iOS version.

How do lyrics work?

Put a .lrc or .txt file with the same name next to the song. Sonora finds it when you sync.

How do I remove songs?

Delete them in the Files app, then run Sync Now.

Where is my music stored?

On the iPhone, inside Sonora. It uses storage and is removed if you delete the app. It is included in device backups by default.

What is missing compared to Android?

No equalizer or pitch controls (speed presets work), no home screen widget, no CarPlay, no +1 min or End timer buttons, and no in-app updater. The sleep timer itself works. Lock screen and Control Center controls and background playback work, but have only been checked in a simulator.
